My Hair Story

Hey there! My name is Kaydene and I have been doing my own hair for some time now. Welcome to the space I’ve dedicated for conversations about hair and where I will share with you the techniques I’ve developed over the years.

Before you adapt any of my techniques however, I’d like to advise you that I am not a licensed cosmetologist so I cannot give professional hair care advice. I just wanted to share with you the techniques I’ve implemented for myself over the years in an effort to answer many questions I’ve gotten throughout my natural hair journey and to also to challenge myself to improve the very techniques I’ve gotten comfortable with.

The Beginning

As a child, I remember having a full head of soft, virgin hair. I remember it beginning around the tender age of 8. I’d run straight to the bathroom mirror right after I got home, to try out a new hair style I thought would suite me well or seen at school.

Around age 12 years old while in high school, with my mother’s approval I got my very first relaxer that I rocked for about 18 years. I had never forgotten the day I got it but I lost so much length because I was told that most of my hair was “damaged”. The best part of my relaxed hair journey was when I met a stylist in the Kingston Jamaica area that was hands down the best stylist I have known to this day.

My Big Chop

In the spring of 2017, when the “going back to natural hair” movement was at it’s peak, and after my first failed attempt of transitioning to 100% relaxer free hair, determinedly, I took a pair of scissors, a spray bottle with water and decapitated every inch of chemically straightened hair I had on my head, leaving me with about 9 months of short, stubby, virgin hair.

To this day, I consider it the bravest decision I had every made as I had no experience with being unable to put hair in a ponytail. I had a wig ready in the event I had created a total disaster, but I ended up loving the result.

Seven years later, I can say it was arguably one of the best decisions I had ever made. My hair has never been healthier and longer and with minimal effort as the older I get, the less I have time to mess with my hair for hours.

I’ve been asked throughout the years of my natural hair journey what my hair routine is and what products do I use. I would be keen to say that all the products I use are best in which there is always room for improvement, but as a result of being asked time after time from both people I know and do not know, I’ve finally brought myself to create a platform where I can share with you the products and techniques I use in hopes that you can find some value for your own hair journey.
